How to cook Sweet and Sour Bola-Bola

For the Meatballs:

  • 1 kilo ground pork
  • 1 cup grated potatoes
  • 1 cup grated carrots
  • 1 cup flour
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 tbsp. soy sauce
  • 2 tsp. brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. ground pepper
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 tbsp. chopped celery

For the Sauce:

  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp. ground pepper
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 1 carrot, sliced
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 3 cups of water
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 3 tsp. soy sauce
  • 1 Knorr cube (shrimp flavor)
  • 1 slice of red bell pepper
  • 2 long chili peppers

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground pork, eggs, chopped onions, grated carrots, grated potatoes, brown sugar, soy sauce, ground black pepper, chopped celery, flour. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into bite-sized meatballs using your hands. Ensure they are evenly sized for even cooking.
  3. Heat oil in a frying pan or skillet over medium heat. Fry the meatballs until they turn golden brown on all sides. Once cooked, transfer the meatballs to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil.
  4. For the sauce, dissolve the cornstarch in bowl and prepare a pot, pour 3 cups of water.
  5. Add the following ingredients in to the pot: minced garlic, chopped onions, sliced carrots, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, brown sugar, Knorr cubes (chicken), black pepper and let it boil.
  6. When it is boiling, add the dissolved cornstarch in to the pot, add sliced long chili, red bell pepper, then reduce the heat to low. Allow the sauce to simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until it thickens to your desired consistency.
  7. Once the sauce has thickened, gently add the cooked meatballs to the pan, ensuring they are coated evenly with the sauce. Simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes to let the flavors meld together.
  8. Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning according to your preference. You can add more salt, sugar, or vinegar to achieve your desired sweet and sour balance.
  9. Once the meatballs are fully heated through and the flavors have infused, remove the pan from the heat.
