- In a mixing bowl, combine the grated cassava, brown sugar, evaporated milk, melted butter, young grated coconut and 2 cups of water. Stir until the sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture is well combined.
- Prepare a steamer by bringing water to a boil in the bottom pot. If you don’t have a steamer, you can also use a large pot with a steamer insert or a heat-resistant dish elevated on a rack inside the pot.
- Grease a round baking dish or a heat-resistant container with a little oil or butter to prevent sticking. Pour the cassava mixture into the greased dish, ensuring that it is evenly spread.
- Carefully place the dish inside the steamer. Cover the steamer with a lid and steam the cassava mixture for about 20 minutes, or until it becomes firm and translucent.
- While the pichi-pichi is steaming, prepare the grated cheese. Set it aside.
- Once the pichi-pichi is cooked, remove it from the steamer and let it cool for a few minutes. Cut it into bite-sized pieces or desired shapes.
- Garnish the top of the pichi-pichi with grated cheese.
- Arrange the coated pichi pichi on a serving platter and serve at room temperature. Enjoy the delightful sweetness and unique texture of this Filipino dessert!
